Swamp Kauri
-
NZ Swamp Kauri originates from ancient kauri trees that fell naturally into New Zealand’s peat swamps, where they were preserved for tens of thousands of years. Some pieces have been carbon-dated at more than 45,000 years old, making swamp kauri one of the oldest workable timbers in the world. The unique swamp environment—cool, oxygen-poor, and rich in natural preservatives—protected these giant trees from decay and locked in their remarkable stability. Because only a limited number of ancient kauri trees were naturally preserved in these swamps, swamp kauri is considered a rare and finite resource. Its origin gives each piece a profound sense of history, making it not just a material, but a story.
-
Visually, NZ Swamp Kauri ranges from warm golden hues to deep, rich browns, often enhanced by minerals absorbed during its time in the swamps. Its grain varies dramatically from piece to piece—swirling figures, knots, organic markings and shimmering depth are common, giving every board its own personality. This natural character creates furniture that feels both luxurious and timeless.
Because no two pieces are ever alike, swamp kauri brings a distinctive presence to any interior: sophisticated, sculptural, and imbued with a sense of heritage that modern timbers cannot replicate. Its uniqueness, ancient age, and natural beauty make it a premium choice for bespoke, high-end furniture that stands as both a functional object and a one-of-a-kind work of art.
-
In contemporary furniture making, NZ Swamp Kauri is highly prized for its balance of beauty, durability, and workability. Despite its density, it responds exceptionally well to both hand tools and modern machinery, allowing us to craft refined, sculptural forms with precision. Its remarkable stability—developed through millennia underground—means it resists warping and twisting, making it ideal for large, statement pieces. In our studio, we use swamp kauri to create everything from dining, coffee, and side tables that showcase its dramatic grain patterns, to high-end cabinetry and storage furniture where its durability and refined finish truly stand out. We also enjoy shaping it into decorative pieces such as sculptures and bowls that highlight the wood’s natural beauty, and occasionally incorporate it into flooring or feature panels to bring warmth and depth to interior spaces. Every design is approached with deep respect for the timber’s rarity and ancient origins, ensuring that each piece we craft honours the unique story carried within the wood.
